Kotor - Olive farm - Kotor (city tour optional)
Duration: up to 4 hrs
Olive Oil Degustation
Feel the spirit of traditional Montenegro while you taste the local food from sustainable farm
The farm that is to be visited is located on the Luštica peninsula, the pearl of Kotor Bay, where one can feel the traditional spirit of Montenegro in the best way and where the olives are grown for hundreds of years. At the entrance, you will be greeted by the smell of homemade food, and the warm welcome of the farm owners combined with the magnificent view of the Bay of Kotor, which takes visitor’s breath away.
The whole area looks like a small museum. The best olive oil has been produced there for seven generations, in the old stone mill. The very same one that has gently and patiently crushed the best olives in Montenegro for 400 years, grown on the Luštica peninsula, at a height of 280m above the sea level. There you will have the chance to learn about the olive trees and the olive oil lifecycle, hear the stories about culture, history, myths and legends of olive oil and the process of making it! And at the end will come the best , the olive oil tasting, an experience that will change the way you see olive oil, appreciate the nuances and it will introduce you to a new world of tastes. Visiting the garden, surrounded by nature, tradition and culture, you will be enchanted by the view over the Bay of Kotor from the old "guvno", which gives a special charm to this farm.
The guvno has historical significance for Montenegro because of its symbolic meaning. It's a place to gather. The guvno is first mentioned in writings more than 300 years ago. At that time, houses were small and not ideal places for families to gather. The surrounding areas were either very rocky or were cleared fields where crops were planted. The community needed a shared space. Centuries ago, each village hired master stonemasons to design and build the local guvno. The villagers would help building it. Once completed, it became a community meeting center. Inside this circle the village chieftain would gather with the elders to discuss the pressing issues of the day.
Leaving guvno, you will visit the area where the famous Montenegrin ham, prosciutto, is smoked, and finally taste traditional dishes, prosciutto, cheese, olives and the traditional pastichada (potato gnocchi with meat), good wine and a dessert, the recipe which grandma jealously guards and which we still haven't been able to reveal!
